I invited my arty-auntie-dancer sister, to this spectacular japanese opera.
Should i really call it opera? I loved how this company defied categorisation.
Blending dance, chant, music, theatre with a unique contemporary touch of nostalgia.

Directed by Yukichi Matsumoto.

It's visually astonishing! From set designs to their rhythmic dance moves.
I only have praises for them. You'll find yourself enchanted by their chants and music.
The outdoor stage was purposely built by Ishinha.

Even free thinkers like me, once murmured, what sounded like prayers to God/s.

I did not know how many prayers I've "cc" to the Gods.

That's what came to me, when I lost my way in the ocean, while diving some years back.

In their first edition, the Brothers Grimm published the version they had first collected,

in which the villain of the piece is Snow White's jealous mother.

In a version sent to another folklorist prior to the first edition, additionally,

she does not order a servant to take her to the woods,

but takes her there herself to gather flowers and abandons her; in the first edition,

this task was transferred to a servant.

It is believed that the change to a stepmother in later editions

was to tone down the story for children.

Apologies Are a Sign of Strength

I overheard a lecture recently on the notion of repentance, and the state of “apologies” in society. A number of famous athletes and politicians have been making the rounds lately, displaying the many different fashions of regret. If you listen closely to their words, you may notice the absence of a real heartfelt apology and understanding of the offense. It has become a rare occasion that a complete apology is made without equivocation.

There are many ways to get around making a proper apology. You can simply blow it off and just say nothing, taking the “let’s just move on” approach. Or you can pass on the blame to others with the “to those who were somehow offended by what I said, sorry” approach – as if it was their fault to find it offensive.

We have all been in meetings or discussions where a colleague will simply try to skirt around a mistake or incorrect statement. Such occasions come across as moments of weakness, void of insight and insulting to those watching. We are probably all guilty of this as well.

We lose respect for a leader when he or she fails to acknowledge a mistake. What we want to see in our leaders is a sense of self-awareness and honesty. Personally, I gain confidence when one of my colleagues says, “Gosh, I don’t know what I was thinking, sorry about [fill in the blank].” It makes me feel like the mistake or false assumption is now fully understood and owned. It makes me feel safe.

We lose respect for a leader when he or she fails to acknowledge a mistake.

What concerns me more is when a colleague makes a naive decision and then, when pointed out or proven wrong, simply moves on without any formal acknowledgment. Whether out of a desire to protect a fragile ego or a refusal to learn from a mistake, it is scary to see. It is scary because it makes us question a colleague’s judgment.

When you are at fault, you might fear that admitting an error is admitting weakness. On the contrary, apologies are a sign of strength. Adversity is an opportunity to show your true colors. It is remarkable when a leader is so confident and self-aware that he or she is able to simply apologize. Personally, I find it inspiring.

I designed the characters last year and kept them in my wardrobe for quite some time.

Im doing some spring cleaning these days, so i thought i'll just post it up.

I hope u enjoy this.

Design rationale: Most of the animal characters are, mostly endangered.

Well, almost all animals are joining the endangered category soon.

So I guess I can draw whatever animals I like. LOL

They are purposely designed with defects. Some totally limbless, some partially.

This is to depict their vulnerability over the many situations, that our "superior" specie, or at least some of us who think they have the right to inflict sufferings on other species.

They did what they did, in return for more wealth, in spite of the necessity of life,

Food.

Thought I'll just post an old painting, which I did back in '07.

acrylic painted on 16.5x23.5" canvas.

The concept is to encourage adoption @ SPCA.

Due to the law of no big dogs in small housing apartments,

and majority of us reside in small apartments,

bigger dogs are usually not popular with adoption here.

The white empty house depicts the longing for someone to fill it up,

to give doggy a home.

The chinese word on its right paw means good fortune,

as seen on the many japanese good luck kitties.

Bring a doggy home, Bring good luck home too!

Music connects people.

The chinese character ”乐” has two meanings. It could mean “joy” and “music”.

I am one who will not leave the house without my headphones. I find joy when I’m plugged in.

When you enter a village, and do not speak their language, just pick up a guitar or any musical

instrument that you can find, and then start playing and singing with it. You’ll find the

connection coming even when we are of different colors and speak non the same language.

I prefer this version to Disney's.
It has better storytelling and directing. Disney's version lacked emotions.
The scenes where she lighted the matches one by one.
She's supposed to be dying, and having illusions...
The part where Disney animator animated her so energetic at lighting 3 matches, to see her grandma,
is just like following the principle of animating from books.
It's not easy to show the emotions of eager and longing and weakening all at one.
I don't feel the emotions. Ok to be fair to them, it's lovely art still.
Just that I do not like broadway acting in every animation. Not every..pls
Pls enjoy Toei's version. I also love the little match girl's character design here.

haha altho in another song, he stole melodies from Alicia Keys and ...anymore? haha but he's got talent.

A puppet has been created by its master, to entertain on the stage.

Its existence is not a choice but a rule or fact.

A craftsman creates.

A puppet entertains.

An egg to be consumed.

A man lives.

What if the puppet has feelings?

What if it doesn't want to entertain anymore?

Is living a rule, or a choice?

Do we have a choice?

The puppet has decided to go unplugged.

Why do we handcuff someone who has gone unplugged?

How about looking at it from another view, and not blame them?

Life is not 规则(rule), but a choice.

I'm not encouraging people to go unplug or do i have suicidal thought.

To someone who happens to have an unplug thought, I'll like to say to u....

Why'd you want to unplug so early, anyway death will find you someday.

So start living!

Stunned by his passing news on the web. Such a great legend had left.

I love his works, from story telling to his aesthetic frames, he's created many classics.

If you haven't watched Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika, and Paranoia Agent, you haven't seen good animations.

The mainstream only know Miyazaki....

I've watched Paprika again. Conclusion: I love Paprika more. If only Nolan can give Satoshi Kon and Yasutaka Tsutsui more acknowledgement.

RIP, Satoshi Kon: Will 'Inception' director speak now for 'PAPRIKA's' dreamy magic?

I am hoping that now, the high-riding Christopher Nolan will help give the great Satoshi Kon an even larger due.

Kon's many, many fans, of course, don't need Nolan's validation to affirm the anime filmmaker's mastery and gift and craft. But if the "Inception" director sings the praises of Kon now, soon after the Japanese animator's death, perhaps thousands more "unenlightened" filmgoers might come to appreciate the accomplishment that is "Paprika."
Kon is known too, of course, for "Perfect Blue" and "Toyko Godfathers" and "Millennium Actress," but it is 2006's "Paprika" -- about a world in which medical professionals use a machine to enter (or "incept") their patients' dreams -- that bears such striking resemblances to Nolan's summer live-action blockbuster.
Even if Nolan was not directly inspired by "Paprika," he surely has seen it -- and surely has appreciated it (and perhaps Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel, as well). Now, I hope Nolan might be as vocal as filmmaker Darren Aronofsky has been in speaking to Kon's gifts.

With his talent for blending realistic and fantastical elements in his eerie and disorienting and gorgeous anime, Kon -- even as relatively short as his career was -- should be remembered as one of Japan's most gifted modern artists.

Kon, who was said to be working on a new film about dreams, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday in Toyko. He was 46.

Maybe is an animated short film by Sam Chou, co-produced by Style5 Animation and Chuck Gammage Animation.

In Maybe, a young perspective in a changing world asks the question: Why are we so scared? This 2-minute animated short follows the relationship between our decisions that we make everyday and the impact they have on our world. Elephant and the Whale.

They are from the same series of animal designs as below's Woofie.

The design rationale for these character designs are pretty clear up till this stage.

This serie of animals are, mostly endangered, oh well.....almost all animals are joining the endangered category...sooner or later....

They are designed without limbs. This is to depict their vulnerability over the many situations, that our "superior" specie, or at least some of us who think they have the rights to inflict sufferings on other species, in return for more wealth, in spite of the necessity of life, food.
